What will people think when they look at my glorious timber appendage? Will I be judged poorly if I go with the cheap option? How will it compare to my neighbours? Which option will last longer? Which one will best handle the exposure to the elements? What can we afford? There was a question that needed answering that the whole project depended on - what timber would it be dressed in? Blackbutt? Merbau? Spotted gum? Dare I say it, treated pine? I lost sleep over this. Progress though came to a grinding holt before I’d cut my first four-by-two. A fair price in my opinion.įeeling confident yet acutely aware that my ambitions were likely confused with my capabilities, I set out to build a deck that any man would be proud of. Not being a chippy, I called a few mates in the trade for advice who were willing to divulge their tips and tricks in return for a post-lockdown beer on the finished product. Pencil met paper and the vision came to life, complete with cascading steps, swanky lights, and a neat hole to encircle the quintessential Aussie front yard Frangipani. You guessed it, a deck.Įvery time I looked out our front window, I looked upon the 1960’s brown tiled patio and imagined in its place a sweeping timber stage on which life could be lived, a perch of my very own from which to watch the world go by. I realised during this lockdown that something was missing in my life. Indeed, there wouldn’t be enough paper on the planet to catalogue all the problems of the world that have been solved by men as they’ve turned snags, swilled schooners, and shot the breeze in the company of mates upon decks nation-wide. The life advice, the stories of love and war, fables of adventure, success, and failure. The conversations that decks across our great nation have eavesdropped on, if retold, would be enthralling. A platform for paper reading, morning coffee drinking, and long naps on warm spring afternoons. A deck is a perch from whence a man can watch the world go by. You’d be mistaken to think that a deck is a luxury addition or just a transport route from house to yard.
